Summer is by far my favourite season (winter sucks, except for Hockey). There’s so much to like; the sun, being warm, beeches, camping trips, and my personal favourite going to the cottage. And there’s so much to love about being at a cottage; swimming, fishing, hiking, water sports, reading a book while soaking in lazy summer days, campfires AND the food that surrounds it! I mean, who doesn’t love sitting around the camp fire surrounded by friends and family staring up into a star filled sky, with a stomach full of beer, spider dogs, and s’mores? It’s only spring as I write but I can hardly wait.
Before I go any further let me first warn the S’more purists out there, this post is not for you. Stop reading, hit the back button, and return to your regular scheduled time-wasting internet ways. For those of you who have grown tired of the graham cracker-cheap chocolate-burnt marshmallow-s’more I have good news for you. This summer just got a lot better for you.
I first had this idea a few years ago while I was living in Windsor. My friends and I got together mostly to eat. I’m not kidding, every party we had revolved around food. It. Was. Awesome. Out of those parties came this idea for gourmet s’mores. We were sitting around one of those illegal-backyard-campfire-pits toasting our marshmallows for our traditional s’more and I was like, “Why can’t we make this better?” My friend Jen and I brain stormed a few ideas and a week later we made Pina Colada, Lemon Meringue, and Black Forest Cake S’mores. They were amazing!
Fast Forward 5 years and I finally had the opportunity to introduce this idea to my family. As the sun set, we gathered around the campfire and made Banana Cream Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, and Black Forest Cake S’mores. It was an amazingly messy yet delicious time. We talked and laughed as our fingers and faces became sticky s’more messes. They were incredibly fun to make.
I know this might sound like I’m over complicating something that’s already good but I swear I’m not. And even if I am, it’s worth the effort. It isn’t like I’m asking you to make everything from scratch, I certainly didn’t. I went to my local Bulk Barn and bought my ingredients. You’re around a damn campfire, not in a gourmet restaurant so making each element from scratch isn’t what this chef ordered. Plus, you just don’t need to be THAT fancy, hell, after a few drinks, does it really matter? Does anything really matter?
Surprise your friends and family this summer with s’more fun. Get creative! Think of how you can transform your favourite dessert into a S’more, unless of course your favourite dessert is a s’more then you are SOL. Go on, you can do it, and make some delicious decisions!
Finally, I’m not giving directions. The point isn’t to be precise but to make these the way you want. Be as messy as you’d like! Put as much topping on them as your mother will allow! Got it? Good. Enjoy!
